The Lord's Supper-Communion

"I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35

The Lord's Supper is the sacrament based on Jesus' words and actions at His last meal with the Apostles. (The Jewish Passover Meal)

The Lord's Supper celebrates the Power of God's Love.

  • It commemorates Jesus' perfect sacrifice on our behalf
  • It renews our fellowship with other Christians
  • It enables us to experience the saving power of God's love through Christ
  • It nourishes our faith in the deepest way possible

A note about our communion services:  Due to the risk of contagions with H1N1 flu, etc. we will serve communion at the table with each communicant coming to receive the sacrament.  (No individual loaves, no intinction).  Hopefully this will provide a holy and healthy way to observe the Lord’s sacrifice for us.

Jesus "took a loaf of bread and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, 'Take: this is my body, broken for you' ". Mark 14:22

"Jesus then took a cup of wine, blessed it and passed it to the disciples, saying, 'This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.' " Mark 14:24
Those invited to share in the Lord's Supper are all people who confess their faith in Jesus Christ.  All people who have been baptized into Christ and the church community may come to the Lord's Supper. (It is not required that you belong to MIPC or to the Presbyterian Church)
During the 8:45 am Worship Service, the Lord's Supper is usually served through intinction, meaning that those, who are able, will be called forward to take a piece from the loaf of bread and dip it in the chalice (grape juice). Those who prefer to be served while seated may indicate this to the ushers.
During the 11:00 am Worship Service, the congregation remains seated while first a loaf of bread is passed by the Elders. We each take a portion, passing the loaf to the next person. We "hold" the piece of bread and partake of it at one time as a congregation. Next, individual servings of the grape juice are distributed by the Elders. You may partake of the "wine" at any time. There are holes for the empty cups built into the back of the pew in front of you.
Children and Communion
  • Communion is a family event in the household of faith.  Children may partake with their parents.  However, some parents may wish to wait until their children are confirmed or  have received communion education classes before they participate. We leave this choice to the family.  The pastor is available for consultation.  It is important to let children know God loves them and that we are all God's family.  Children do not need to fully "understand" in order to partake.  Do any of us understand fully what God has done for us through Jesus Christ? Please consult with our pastor or Director of Christian Education if you would like some help in explaining to your child why this "meal with God" is so special and important.
