JUNIOR HIGHS

Does life and school sometimes feel like having to hack your way through tangled vines of gossip, judgments, tricks and pitfalls? Do any of your classmates remind you of real animals?! It’s a jungle out there and you need a trusted guide to help figure out why life is unfair at times and how to handle it! Meet us in the SCUBA Room of the Youth House!  Sunday 9:45 am         Mike Smith

Generation “Why!?” Youth: Senior Highs

We have an extraordinary group of youth who don't want a spoon fed faith.  They are looking for honest and hard hitting discussions so this year we will use “The Thoughtful Christian” for Youth! Here’s a preview of two of our newest studies:

“Twilight”-the popular book and film that tells a story of forbidden love & a girl’s exploration of what kind of relationship she wants.   What kind of love and relationships does the Bible recommend?  What are the consequences of turning our backs on Biblical wisdom?

“I Am Legend”-this popular science fiction film explores the possibilities of the end of modern civilization due to pandemic disease and introduces the concept of a ripple effect.  What was Jesus’ ripple effect and what will ours be?

In addition to Bible studies, our youth participate in “Church Hops”  learning about our own Christian traditions by comparing them to those of others and then visiting those congregations. Haven’t you always wondered?

Sponsors: Cindy Bottomley & Dave Hertzler

See the youth bulletin board or check your email for news of our upcoming activities.

Planning for Summer Retreats for Junior and Senior Highs: Montreat Presbyterian Youth Summer Conference (in beautiful Western NC)

In These Waters” Called from the chaos, we gather in this sacred space, rooted in God’s call and purpose. We seek to provide an authentic community of unconditional love where each individual gives and receives support, trust, and acceptance from others. We will encourage and empower youth to encounter God in, through, and with each other to ask questions, embrace challenges, and be commissioned to apply their faith relevantly in the world. The Montreat Youth Conferences are designed for high school students, entering freshmen through graduated seniors. A Youth Conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. Activities include morning energizers, music, keynote, small group meetings where the conference theme is explored, afternoon recreation activities, and evening worship.

”I Love/Hate Valentine’s Day Lock-in”A huge success! We had 18 youth and 3 chaperones at our I LOVE/HATE Valentine's Day Lock In.  We had a blast.  We made "top your own pizzas" and Ice Cream Sundaes and cooked a delicious blueberry pancake breakfast together in addition to zany games (the girls won the Valentine Boggle game) and our contest.  At midnight we had time to reflect on what I Corinthians 13: 4-8 has to say about the character of true love. Watch for our next event and join the fun.

The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Summer Youth Institute is a free program nationally offered to high school students designed to foster "a Christian community challenging youth to grow in faith and gain deeper understanding of the Gospel and its implications for today's world."
Since 1997, the Summer Youth Institute has drawn rising high school seniors from Washington, DC to San Francisco, CA, Canby, MN to Trujillo Alto, PR and everywhere in between. These scholars come from small parishes and big steeples, big cities and small towns, US territories and Indian Nations, representing all walks of life and theological perspectives within the Presbyterian Church USA. They come to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary to ask deep questions about life and faith, to think critically about these issues and explore ministry from the pulpit and the pews.
Forming and reforming as individuals in community through study, worship, mission, and ultimate frisbee, the scholars engage one another, faculty, seminarians and SYI alums. Because of the Institute's emphasis on intentional Christian community, SYI provides a safe space to grow in faith while wrestling with real world questions where canned answers aren't accepted.

Request: Dave Brubaker says the Sharing Center is in need of help serving meals on Saturdays or Sundays as their weekend manager is suffering from a serious reaction to a brown recluse spider bite and can’t work. If an adult from our congregation would champion and organize 4-5 youth on a monthly or every other month basis we could meet this need. Dave reports that the number of homeless people is on the rise and they are seeing up to a 50% increase in the number of people seeking food on the weekends!
